It’s fire season - we are coming into summer in the UK and the heat is turning up. In ayurveda (traditional Indian medicine which has been around for ‘000’s of years) I’m predominantly a dominant ‘pitta’ dosha which means I’m largely governed by the element of fire.
I’m light skinned, blonde haired, and with a muscular frame.
As I lean more into this way of viewing life I’m very aware of how I tend to put out my own flame. I dampen things down, hide, make myself small and stop moving.
When I do this I feel depressed, stuck, stagnant and generally bleugh. As you can probably guess it’s not a nice feeling!
As the summer arrives I realise how much I’ve missed the hot weather. Living 4+ years in hot climates including the winter in Brazil (think 40 degree plus) was a natural catalyst and support for me when it came to keeping ‘in flow’. What I mean by that is keeping my momentum, feeling connected to life & myself, and generally enjoying myself.
Any time I allow or cause the flame to go out, I feel awful. The energy which should be used to ‘create’ turns inwards on itself and causes the polar opposite.
If you’re not being creative you’re being destructive - an artist friend of mine once said and I have a tendency to agree with him.
It’s easy to get stuck in the destructive cycle and hence on a downward spiral where your energy and passion for life diminishes with each turn.
Keeping the flame alive is the key to finding balance and fulfilment in my experience. No, that doesn’t mean keeping going at all costs. It means finding the activities, people and things that keep you in the flow lane. Doing what you enjoy, keeping your body, mind and energy moving.
Overthinking will kill the fire every time. The flame is in the energy of your entire system, not in the logic of your rational mind. Keep that in check and you’ll be doing better than most!
In breathwork I often speak about getting out of your head and into your body. The same applies.
The body keeps the score. It is the source of sensation and inspiration. If you’re not connected to yourself, how can you expect to stay connected with the mysterious ecstatic current of life? You can’t.
What stokes your fire? It will be different for everyone. The key is finding what lights you up and making it a priority in your life.
When you do that you’ll find energy you never knew you had.
Breathe the change you wish to see in the world
P.S. If you're ready to create a new empowering story for yourself, I have a couple of opportunities coming up.
